Sony employee, Ken Kutaragi, is credited with the creation of PlayStation. Back in the late 80s, Sony wasn't a big player in the console video game industry, but rumors of a Nintendo-Sony partnership for a CD peripheral to the SNES were afloat as early as 1989. Kutaragi was the driving force behind Sony's new foray into gaming. At CES in 1991, Sony revealed a SNES with a CD drive. Immediately after, Nintendo revealed that the CD deal had fallen through and that Nintendo would be using Phillips technology for the CD version of the SNES. However, that partnership didn't work out too well, and a CD based SNES never caught on. You'd have thought that Sony and Nintendo would have talked about that before CES, right? Very strange.

Anyway, Sony was quite displeased with the sudden announcement and Kutaragi fought to keep the gaming project, nicknamed "Play Station" (yes, with the space) alive despite opposition from Sony higher-ups. Kutaragi's team decided to move into 3D-polygonal graphics on a CD-ROM format, and within two years, development of the Play Station was well underway.

But throughout this process, Nintendo still kept negotiating with Sony about keeping the Play Station on an SNES. The sides had major differences of opinion regarding who would own the rights to games released on the CD format. Nintendo needed Sony's cooperation since the SNES used a Sony manufactured sound card. It wasn't until 1993 that Sony decided that they wanted to cut ties with Nintendo. The project was renamed "PlayStation", and released in 1994 to critical acclaim.
